Earthquake

An earthquake is an unexpected vibrating or shaking movement of the earth's crust. The Netherlands has relatively mild earthquakes. This is because our country is not located near the edge of a tectonic plate. Nevertheless, earthquakes that can be felt do occur from time to time. Especially in Limburg because of its location on a geographical fault line. An earthquake can also occur without a natural cause. In the Netherlands, these often occur due to mining, for example gas extraction in Groningen.

Think ahead

  • Put together an emergency kit.
  • Make sure the roof tiles on your house are straight and secure. Also regularly check the condition of the chimney.
  • Check that cupboards cannot fall over and that heavy objects such as clocks, lamps and paintings are properly secured.
  • Provide a torch in case the power goes out.

Advice during an earthquake

Government actions

Gas extraction from the Groningen field will be completely terminated in the coming years. The government is therefore taking measures to completely phase out gas extraction as soon as possible. Removing the cause of the earthquake risk will benefit safety and the perception of safety in Groningen.

The government provides assistance if an earthquake causes major damage or creates social unrest. Municipalities, security regions and emergency services take care of any on-site victims and indicate as soon as possible what you can do yourself. The latter is done via the security region's website, via www.government.nl, the regional radio station or an NL-Alert. In addition, buildings, roads and bridges are checked for (un)safety.
