International tensions

Global security is under pressure from various, international tensions. These tensions are caused by political or economic conflicts which also affects security in Europe. Russia's military invasion of Ukraine has caused war in Europe.

In the Netherlands, we also consider the consequences of these international tensions. The Netherlands is a NATO member. NATO is a military cooperation of 30 countries from Europe and North America. If one of these countries is attacked, NATO allies are ready to defend it. We work closely together to protect NATO territory. The Netherlands also works with other countries to strengthen European security.

International tensions can also have consequences in the Netherlands. Preparing for this can make you feel safe and secure.

Think ahead

  • Follow government information. If a military threat increases, you can find information about it at www.government.nl.
  • If something does happen in the Netherlands, you will hear the public warning siren and receive NL-Alert notification on your mobile. For up-to-date information you can check www.government.nl and the website of your security region, or listen to your regional broadcaster on radio and TV.
  • Taking shelter can contribute to your safety. Therefore, you can think about possible places where you can take shelter for example, at home, work or school. Sheltering outside or in vehicles does not offer enough protection. The best locations are underground or in the middle of large buildings.
  • Put together an emergency kit
  • Be prepared that there could be a combination of, for example, major cyber-attacks, the spread of false information, failures in (electronic) payment systems and the failure of drinking water supply systems.

Government actions

  • The Dutch armed forces are always ready to defend the territory of the Netherlands and NATO allies. Dutch military personnel can be quickly deployed in the event of various threats.
  • Militarily, the Netherlands works closely with other European and NATO countries.
  • Together, these countries guard international security. In the Netherlands, the central government and security services monitor for threats day and night.
  • Due to its geographical location, good ports and airports, the Netherlands is an important logistics partner of NATO. As a result, you can see military equipment from other NATO countries being transported via the Netherlands. The Dutch armed forces also regularly transport equipment by road, sea and air. This equipment is used for exercises for example. If you see a military column on the highway, give priority.
  • Since the war in Ukraine, there is more military personnel in NATO countries bordering Russia. This is for the security of those countries and to deter Russia from attacking NATO.
  • The Ministry of Defence is always looking for enthusiastic people. If you are interested in protecting what we hold dear, please visit www.werkenbijdefensie.nl (information in Dutch only).
